Overview

Zurich - Overview

Consistently ranked as the world's top city to live in, Zurich can be an expatriate's dream city to live and work in. Zurich residents have it all in terms of the best quality of life – be it healthcare, education, public transport and other public services, strong economy, rich culture, great geographical location, all enjoyed amidst the scenic backdrop of Lake Zurich and Limmat River.

Switzerland is a land-locked country - it has no direct access to the sea. Its neighboring countries are Germany to the North, Italy to the South, Austria and Liechtenstein to the east and France to the west. Zurich is located in the northern / German-speaking part of Switzerland, at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich (Zürichsee). Although technically described as a lake, Lake Zurich is not a small body of water – the lake stretches over 40 km and is 4 km at its widest point. The main tributary of Lake Zurich is the Limmat River that runs through the city. It is the rivers and lakes in Zurich that give the city its picturesque appeal.

In terms of population, Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland (total population 7.2 million), with a population of some 360,000 residents in Zurich. Canton (similar to the US term 'state') Zurich's population is 1.27 million. Foreigners make up around 22% of the 1.27 million residents in Canton Zurich. The national percentage average of foreigners living in Swiss cities is around 20%.

Zurich is widely recognized as the commercial center of Switzerland (home to the world's fourth biggest bourse), but the capital of Switzerland is Berne. For information on employment, population and other economic indicators, visit the Swiss Federal Statistical Office at www.bfs.admin.ch
