Car Rental

Hong Kong - Car Rental

Renting a car in Hong Kong is a similar process to renting cars in Western countries. Drivers have to be over the age of 21 and, in most cases, it is preferable that they are over the age of 24. Some companies will only rent certain types of vehicles to those who are younger than 25 years old.

The smaller car companies tend to offer the most affordable rates. However, some of the larger international companies might also offer deals and promotions that can make their rates more attractive. It helps to comparison shop when you are in the market for a rental care. Some websites, such as Kayak, will search for all of the car rental companies at once to make it easier to find which company has the best rates.

In addition to renting a car and driving it yourself, many companies also offer chauffeured services as well. The prices are normally on an hourly basis.

Some of the popular car rental companies in Hong Kong include the following:

HAWK
Room 1009 10/F Corporation Park

New Territories, Hong Kong

Most of the car rental companies will offer their own insurance policies for an extra charge. This is something that you might want to consider, even if your own car insurance policy covers damages to rental cars. At any rate, you should check your own policy and be familiar with it before you rent a vehicle to determine what it will and will not cover.

It is not possible at this time to transport a rental vehicle into Mainland China from Hong Kong. There are some international companies, however, that offer chauffeur driven services across the border. These tend to be more expensive than what you might pay per hour if you were simply being chauffeured in Hong Kong.

Regular rates are based on length of use. Most rates are quoted on a daily basis. There are, however, weekend rates available that cover the cost of 2 or 3 days, depending on the company. The class of car that you rent will also be a factor in determining cost. For instance, to rent a Toyota Corolla from Avis for a day, the standard rate is HK$930. A Mercedes Benz, on the other hand, is HK$3900. Vehicles can be rented on a weekly and even a monthly basis.

Most companies have optional add-ons such as navigation systems, booster seats, infant car seats, etc. In addition, you can count on the majority of the companies having rentals with unlimited mileage.

At the airport, the car rental counters are located in the arrivals hall on Level 5. The companies that are currently represented at the Hong Kong airport include:
Intercontinental Hire Cars
Tel: 2261 2155
http://www.trans-island.com.hk

Parklane Limousine Service
Tel: 2261 0303
http://www.hongkonglimo.com

Both have desks there.

When renting a car, you can use your foreign driver’s license or your Hong Kong license. Keep in mind that you might have to pay a deposit when you pick the vehicle up. The amount of the deposit can vary but can be as much as the price of the rental itself.
