At Expat Focus, we like to be on the lookout for resources around the web that could help prospective expats adjust to their new countries. Today, we’re taking a look at Egypt and some of the blogs that might be useful for expats there.Aisha’s Oasis
www.aishasoasis.wordpress.com
Aisha followed her heart and embarked on a ‘joyride to Egypt’ when she left her home in California for a new life. A talented writer, she has documented her expat life with photos and poems too; her essays on Egyptian culture are a must read for any hopeful expats. Posts are peppered with photographs, which allow the reader an additional window to her life in Egypt.
A Sense Of Belonging
www.asenseofbelonging.org
The Casper family of four left the USA for Cairo in 2009. Now a family of six, they share their everyday lives on their blog, which chronicles the realities of living so far from home. Cultural insights about marriage, children and religion are big themes, all delivered with a ‘sympathetic analysis of Egypt’. A very useful read for any prospective expat family.
Escapade Through Egypt
www.escapadethroughegypt.wordpress.com
Bernadette dabbles in photography so it was only fitting that her blog is an alphabetical photo adventure of her life since 2009. You will be introduced to elements of Egypt one letter at a time; food, nature, products and even people fill her pages. T is for tourists, taxis and tea, whilst under F you’ll find festivals, feluka and fantastically coloured fish. Her concept works really well with her conversational tone and the blog is a must read for expats in Egypt.
Peregrine Chronicles
www.sankablog.wordpress.com
Although she has now moved on, Neeraja’s blog is a record of her Coptic adventures, Arabic lessons and teaching at the American University in Cairo. ‘Welcome in Egypt’ is a greeting uniquely Egyptian, and to this blogger exemplifies her experiences of living in a place where ‘everything is familiar but slightly askew’. She writes elegantly about the concept of home and fitting in, in a place where you do nothing but stick out, issues that are common to most expats.
Simply LeAnne – Letters from Egypt
www.simplyleanne.blogspot.com
Having now moved on from Egypt, LeAnne’s blog is still filled with helpful information for any expat considering Cairo as their next home. She was inspired to write about her life due to the lack of accurate portrayals, beyond the romantic, available to her before she moved there. Her learning curve and adjustment to life in Egypt was like a rollercoaster, starting with tears in Brooklyn and ending eight years later with many obstacles overcome and a love for the complicated but magical country that was her expat home.
We’re always on the lookout for more sites to feature – if you run a blog about living in Egypt, leave us a link in the comments and we’ll take a look!
