Azerbaijan – Recommended Blogs

At Expat Focus, we like to be on the lookout for resources around the web that could help prospective expats adjust to their new countries. Today, we’re taking a look at Azerbaijan and some of the blogs that might be useful for expats there.Speak Azeri

Colleen is a teacher-librarian and educational writer living in Baku. She is passionate about Azerbaijani culture, particularly the traditional music, which she is striving to master. Eager to learn the local language, she blogs in both English and Azerbaijani and also posts vlogs of her singing and playing instrumental pieces on traditional instruments. Her love of words is only part of the blog, you will also find food a plenty, which is recently gluten free.

Even though Kia has now moved on from Baku her blog holds a wealth of information useful to any future or current expats to Azerbaijan. From the basics of where to find baked beans to organisations aimed at helping and connecting the expat community and the best restaurant to take visiting family, you’ll find it all here. Her honest restaurant reviews are brimming with accompanying photos that will make your mouth water, her advice is relevant to the recent and long-term expat alike.

Scary Azeri

A native Azerbaijani turned expat in Doha this (non) scary Azeri feels foreign here, there and everywhere. Her window on life in Baku comes in the form of reminiscences of childhood and the comparisons with everyday life in the UK (and beyond). Her cultural advice column for Baku expats is fantastic and gives you a no holds barred look at Azerbaijan through the eyes of a native expat. Though she may have moved on, visits are regular and her expat opinions are worth a look for anyone considering a move.

The Brief Note
www.thebriefnote.com

Although Dustin has now said farewell to Azerbaijan he documented his year spent with the Peace Corps so eloquently his blog still deserves its place here. 2012 was the year that this US native landed in Baku with exactly zero words of the local language, his self produced pronunciation guide is a useful tool and no doubt created out of necessity. He takes you on trips to the big city, out into the countryside and gives you a peek at the hospitality (and hot tea) you can expect living as an expat in this beautiful country.

We’re always on the lookout for more sites to feature – if you run a blog about living in Azerbaijan, leave us a link in the comments and we’ll take a look!
