My name is Daria Kawecka and I am a Software Developer from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
I moved from Edmonton to Grand Cayman on April 11th 2011. My main reason was for the adventure.
What challenges did you face during the move?
Moving back home to rent out my condo was hard. Packing up a fairly adult life into a few boxes was very challenging. How did you find somewhere to live?
My company recommended a property management company on the island. She drove me around a bunch of properties in my first week and I found a place I like.
Are there many other expats in your area?
There are tons of expats here. I think there are about 20 000 which is very large for a total population of about 50 000 people.
What is your relationship like with the locals?
I have not had any issues with the locals. I heard stories about how expats get treated in Bermuda and was worried it would be the same here but the locals are very nice.
What do you like about life where you are?
The natural beauty is breath taking. I love that a bikini doubles for underwear. The fact that I ride a rusty bike to work with a basket on the front and no one looks at me twice. The social aspect is really good here too. Since there are so many people in the same boat everyone is really friendly and willing to help new people out.
What do you dislike about your expat life?
I have not been here long enough yet but I hear you start to miss shopping malls. I domiss my family and friends.
What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?
Don’t look back. All the hard work of uprooting your life is really worth it.
What are your plans for the future
This is a little up in the air right now. I will be here for at least two years and see where that takes me.
