Iceland – Top Five Expat Blogs

At Expat Focus, we like to be on the lookout for resources around the web that could help prospective expats adjust to their new countries. Today, we’re taking a look at Iceland and some of the bloggers who write about living there.

Sky As A Kite
https://tine.pagekite.me/

Christina blogs about her daily life and misadventures as an expat in Reykjavik, where she works as a physiotherapist. The site is an interesting mixture of current events, historical tidbits and beautiful photography – the landscapes, flora and fauna provide ample opportunity for photographic posts, and Sky as a Kite takes full advantage of this natural appeal.

Wollegras
https://wollegras.wordpress.com/

The title of this site comes from blogger Mariska’s Dutch roots – it’s the name of a type of plant that can be found in the Netherlands. Mariska runs her own business and blogs under the tagline ‘How to become Icelandic’. One of the most useful things about Wollegras is that Mariska isn’t afraid to blog about the darker side of expat life – her recent post about why Iceland isn’t a destination without its own troubles is a refreshingly honest look at some of the challenges expats can face in a new country.

An open and occasionally irreverent look at expat life in Reykjavik, Getting Cosy will help you to really understand what is involved with a move to a new country. Siobhan does a lot of travelling around the country, and her posts about hiking in different areas, exploring abandoned buildings and even experiences at local grocery stores will make you smile and encourage you to make the move yourself. Once again, the photography on this blog is amazing and really brings out the feeling of being in Iceland, travelling around the snowy landscape in pursuit of the expat dream.

Unlocking Kiki
http://unlockingkiki.com/

Kiki writes about expat life in Iceland and her travels around the country. The ‘expat tips’ section will be particularly useful to anyone who is new to the idea of moving to a new place, and the ‘Icelandic blooper reel’ with both make you laugh and help you feel right at home. There are also some guides and insider tips included throughout the site, which will provide an insight into what it’s like to live there and give you some ideas about the best places to visit outside of the area you’re moving to.

Eth & Thorn
https://ethandthorn.wordpress.com/

A linguist New Yorker who now lives in Reykjavik and studies at the University of Iceland is the voice behind Eth & Thorn, which is definitely recommended reading if you’re interested in fully immersing yourself in Icelandic culture after you move. The linguistic musings throughout the blog are fascinating, and there are some great links to resources around the web which will no doubt also be of use. The site doesn’t just focus on language though; recent posts include some thoughts about the spring arts festival and what it’s like when your family visit from back home. This is one to watch, especially if you’re a student, an academic or just interested in learning the language.

Those are our recommended expat blogs for today. Do you write about being an expat? Let us know in the comments!
