Who are you?
My name is Lady Anne. I am a Filipino working in Dubai. I am a Medical Laboratory Technologist and a Travel Blogger.Where, when and why did you move abroad?
It was 2008 when I left the Philippines and moved to the UAE. I moved abroad mainly for personal growth.
What challenges did you face during the move?
Homesickness and cultural differences are the challenges I had to face on my first year in Dubai.
Are there many other expats in your area?
Expatriates make up more than half of the total population in Dubai.
What do you like about life where you are?
I have plenty of reasons to like about my life in Dubai. The top five would probably be the safety, the wonderful opportunities, the culinary diversity, the tax-free living and the life-learning experiences.
What do you dislike about your expat life?
I don’t like the constant increase in room rentals. And when homesickness sinks in, I don’t like the thought of not spending more time with my loved ones back home.
What is the biggest cultural difference you have experienced between your new country and life back home?
I had a difficult time during my first Ramadan in the country. The “no eating and drinking in public” rule during daytime was the hardest for me.
What advice would you give to anyone following in your footsteps?
Research is essential before moving. Familiarize yourself with the tradition and lifestyle before your flight to ease the culture shock.
What are your plans for the future?
I can see myself living in Dubai for a couple of years more. I love this city!
